Court Proceedings and Evidence
Cardiff Magistrates’ Court is hearing the case of former world-champion boxer Joe Cordina, who faces a charge of assault by beating for an incident that occurred on February 27 at a Texaco garage in the Pentwyn area of Cardiff. Video footage captured by a witness and later posted on Wales Online shows Cordina filling his car, walking to Jamie O’Brien, and a series of blows exchanged over several minutes. The footage also shows Cordina briefly brandishing a golf club before O’Brien was restrained. O’Brien, who had previously admitted a charge of assault by beating, was ultimately restrained and “posed no further threat,” according to the court record.
Official Statements & Responses
In a police interview, Cordina denied the alleged offence, stating that “having been shoved” he “felt threatened” and punched “out of instinct” because of O’Brien’s actions. His defence barrister Tom Crowther KC argued that the video was used to “watch and wait” for Cordina, suggesting a possible set-up, and asked investigating officer PC Samuel Penman to review the recording. Penman acknowledged the video began before any physical altercation but said it was not “obviously” staged.
