History

Historical Context

On November 8 1994, the Republican Party, rallying behind Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America, captured a 54-seat House swing and eight Senate seats, ending a 42-year GOP absence from the House. The victory marked a Southern white-conservative realignment and introduced hard-line, nationalized campaign messaging that later resurfaced in contemporary partisan attacks during today’s political climate.
