Advance Voting Begins for Alberta’s Constitutional Referendum

How the Advance Poll Works
Alberta’s ten-question referendum on constitutional matters, immigration and the province’s future within Canada will be decided on a voting day in October. To give voters more flexibility, advance voting opens at the start of the week and continues through the weekend at designated locations in each electoral district. Voters must cast their ballots at the advance poll in the district where they reside; the list of sites is available through an Elections Alberta searchable database.
What Voters Need to Know
Elections Alberta advises voters to bring appropriate identification, as outlined on the agency’s website. Those who did not request a mail-in ballot, or who missed the late-September deadline for returning one, can still vote in person at an advance poll. The agency received roughly 652,000 requests for special mail-in ballots, making it difficult to predict line lengths. To avoid crowds, officials suggest visiting during non-peak times such as mid-morning or mid-afternoon.
If a special ballot is received and counted before the voter arrives, the individual will be directed to vote in person. Unreceived ballots will be rejected, and voters are encouraged to use priority or express post to meet the early-October mailing deadline.
Safeguards and Process Integrity
Elections Alberta spokesperson Michelle Gurney emphasized that the voter registry is continuously updated, allowing election workers to verify that each person votes only once. The agency’s procedures are described as “robust” and designed to protect against voter fraud, with live records ensuring that duplicate voting is prevented.

Why It Matters
The referendum’s outcome could reshape Alberta’s relationship with the Canadian federation. By offering advance voting and clear guidance, Elections Alberta aims to facilitate broad participation while maintaining confidence in the electoral process amid heightened public emotions surrounding the province’s future.
