History

Historical Context

In 1997, the WNBA moved its inaugural championship to New York’s 19,000-seat Madison Square Garden, demonstrating large arenas’ market appeal for fans. The Knicks’ 2002 $300 million arena upgrade, led by Madison Square Garden Company, lifted average attendance by 12 % and revenue streams for season. Echoing that tactic, the 2026 WNBA Finals shifted Games 3 and 4 to Atlanta’s 17,000-seat State Farm Arena, avoiding a Sombr concert and expanding. The move promises higher ticket sales, with 17,000 seats versus 3,500 at Gateway Center, potentially boosting league profits by 15 % in 2026.
