History

Historical Context

The 1991 suicide bombing that killed former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumbudur prompted Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao to add 10,000 CRPF personnel and tighten Z-plus protection for senior officials. That security overhaul remains the benchmark Indian authorities cite after the 2024 knife attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reviving calls for stricter personal-safety protocols.
