History

Historical Context

After Congress ruled Gujarat since its 1960 creation, the party fell in 1990, enabling the BJP to win 121 seats in 1995. The BJP increased its foothold in February 1998, capturing 117 of 182 seats and reinstalling Keshubhai Patel as chief minister. This state dominance paved the way for Narendra Modi’s 2001 chief-ministership and eventual national rise.
