Crash and Immediate Aftermath

On October 3, 18-year-old Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe allegedly lost control of his BMW convertible and drove into a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters gathered near the Transfield Drive roundabout on Newcastle Link Road in Wallsend. The fans were lining the streets to wave the team’s bus off to the NRL grand final. Police allege the vehicle was travelling erratically before it struck the crowd. Ten people were injured and received on-scene treatment from paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.

Legal Developments and Additional Charges

Following ongoing investigations, police added eight new offences on October 13, 2026, bringing the total to 17 charges. The added counts include:

  • one count of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and
  • six counts of causing grievous bodily harm by misconduct while in charge of a motor vehicle.

These augment the original nine offences (dangerous driving, negligent driving and causing bodily harm by misconduct).

Injuries and Medical Updates

Among the injured were a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man identified as Dave “the Barber” Martin. The girl’s family reported that she was placed in an induced coma and has undergone multiple surgeries; further details are limited for privacy reasons. Martin and another male patient remain in stable condition at John Hunter Hospital.

Bail Conditions and Court Schedule

After six nights in custody, Samarasinghe was released on bail. He must:

  • report to police daily between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.;
  • remain at home between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.;
  • observe an 8 p.m. curfew;
  • refrain from driving, sitting in the driver’s seat, or being within 20 km of Newcastle;
  • surrender his passport and abstain from drugs and alcohol; and
  • be escorted by one of two approved persons when leaving home.

His licence, suspended in February 2026 and unsuccessfully appealed in April 2026, was suspended again after the crash. Samarasinghe is scheduled to appear in Newcastle Local Court on October 15, 2026 via video link.

Official Statements & Responses

Judge Trevor Khan described several injuries as “very serious,” noting that a child sustained a brain injury and that at least two victims were at risk of death. Police thanked members of the crowd who provided first aid and CPR at the scene.

Data & Statistics

  • 10 people injured (including a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man).
  • Charge breakdown: 1 dangerous driving GBH, 1 negligent driving GBH, 6 causing GBH by misconduct, plus the original offences.
  • Bail conditions restrict driving, passenger-seat occupancy, and proximity to Newcastle (20 km).

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

Sources differ on the current medical status of the five-year-old girl: some note she remains in an induced coma, while others provide no further update due to privacy concerns. Additionally, while all outlets agree on the number of injured (ten), only some specify the stable condition of Martin and another male patient.

What’s Next

The next judicial step is Samarasinghe’s appearance in Newcastle Local Court on October 15, 2026, where pleas are expected to be entered and further bail or sentencing considerations will be addressed.
