History

Historical Context

In 1990 the NFL, under Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, issued its first steroid suspension, banning Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau for four games and costing him roughly $1.5 million. The league’s testing program, launched in 1987, has since expanded, and most recently Chicago Bears pass-rusher Montez Sweat received a two-game, $2.3 million suspension, echoing the early precedent.
