History

Historical Context

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia launched a coalition air campaign against Houthi rebels in Yemen, aiming to restore the internationally recognized government. The United States pledged $5.6 billion in military assistance, while the United Nations condemned civilian casualties, reporting over 3,000 deaths by 2020. The October 9 2026 missile and drone strike on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport mirrors the 2015 escalation, prompting renewed Saudi air offensives and U.S. policy reviews. These patterns suggest that future regional security will hinge on diplomatic pressure from the United Nations and potential recalibration of American support for Saudi operations.
