History

Historical Context

Tom Dempsey’s 63-yard field goal on November 8 1970 gave the New Orleans Saints a 19-17 win and set a record that lasted 43 years. That long-range benchmark still shapes teams; the Los Angeles Rams released inconsistent kicker Harrison Mevis (5-of-9) and added rookie Blake Grupe, whose 81.9 % success mirrors the historic Dempsey standard as the league pursues greater kicking range.
