History

Historical Context

In 1984-85 the NBA introduced a $4.6 million salary cap to promote competitive balance. A 1995 increase to $30.3 million let teams like the Boston Celtics sign role players such as Dee Brown to a five-year $30 million deal. Decades later, the Celtics’ 2023-24 supermax for Jaylen Brown ($304 million) and a 2024 $44.2 million extension for Payton Pritchard illustrate how the league’s expanding cap—now $123.7 million—continues to drive contracts.
