History

Historical Context

In 1999 Manchester United overturned Bayern Munich 2-1 on 26 May, completing the Premier League-FA Cup-Champions League treble and securing a £30 million Vodafone shirt-sponsorship and £12 million in UEFA prize money. The triumph sparked a surge in commercial revenue and global fan support. Today, United’s £140 million midfield outlay, led by Lisandro Martínez under Michael Carrick, draws criticism after a 2-0 loss to Atlético Madrid.
