Alleged Surveillance Plot at OpenAI
Federal prosecutors allege that Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi Arabian national and U.S. permanent resident, concealed a thumb-sized recording device in a piece of toilet paper and attached it behind a monitor in an executive conference room at OpenAI’s San Francisco office. The complaint, unsealed on Tuesday, states that Alfozan spent several weeks querying an internal “productivity agent” and an “AI chatbot” to identify meetings held in the targeted room and to obtain technical guidance on building and installing the device.
How AI Tools Were Allegedly Used
Prosecutors say these prompts demonstrate a deliberate plan to capture sensitive conversations about the company’s super-intelligence technology.
Legal Actions and Official Responses
The Justice Department announced that Alfozan was arrested on October 9 and made his initial appearance in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on the same day.
Device Details and Security Findings
Security personnel discovered the primary device inserted into a USB port on the back of a television in the conference room. The device, described as a development board with a detachable camera sensor, digital microphone, and microSD storage, was wrapped in toilet paper and encrypted. A separate, similar device was later found in Alfozan’s personal bag, along with his wallet and identification.
Next Steps in the Case
Alfozan remains in federal custody pending further proceedings. The indictment does not specify a trial date, and the court will schedule subsequent hearings to determine bail, potential plea negotiations, and a trial timeline.
