Yaron Zelekha Vows Rapid Cost-of-Living Reforms and Threatens to Topple Any Blocking Government

By Drooid · · How we work

Cost-of-Living Initiative

Economic Party leader Yaron Zelekha announced that, if appointed finance minister, his first actions will produce a noticeable reduction in household expenses within three months. He framed the high price of everyday items as a national security issue, arguing that young Israelis fear supermarket bills more than regional threats. Zelekha said the plan will generate revenue for the state because the government itself pays inflated prices for its purchases.

Key Policy Measures

Zelekha outlined a five-step program:

1. Abolish all tariffs and import quotas without exception.

2. Prevent domestic producers that also act as importers from monopolising the market.

3. Ban exclusive import agreements that allow a single importer to control competing foreign manufacturers.

4. Transfer the Competition Authority to the Finance Ministry so he can directly oversee competition enforcement.

5. Implement the above measures immediately, with further reforms to follow throughout the government’s term.

He maintains that these steps require no additional funding and will lower consumer prices while improving public finances.

Political Conditions and Coalition Strategy

Zelekha told the Jerusalem Post that his economic agenda will remain unchanged regardless of which bloc—Benjamin Netanyahu, Naftali Bennett, or Gadi Eisenkot—forms the government. He warned that any prime minister who obstructs his program will face a vote of no confidence, and he is prepared to bring down the coalition and join the opposing side.

Beyond economic reforms, Zelekha set two non-negotiable coalition conditions: no participation by Arab parties and no tolerance for draft evasion. He called for mandatory national service for Arab citizens and for the Haredi community, proposing tailored military frameworks that respect religious observance while increasing enlistment.

Official Statements & Responses

Zelekha emphasized that his right-wing positions on security and settlements will not affect the implementation of his economic plan.
