History

Historical Context

The Great Fire of London erupted on September 2, 1666, razing over 13,200 homes and reshaping the city’s commercial districts. King Charles II ordered the newly formed London Fire Office to coordinate response, while the Royal Navy supplied 30 fire-engine crews and 5,000 gallons of water. Like that 1666 conflagration, the October 12, 2026 blaze at Paris’s Marché des Enfants Rouges summoned 150 firefighters, 50 vehicles, and two high-powered hoses. Both disasters prompted stricter building codes, leading London to adopt Wren’s fire-proof stone façades and Paris to launch a market-safety audit.
