Historical Context

After the BJP-led NDA won the 1998 Lok Sabha election, President K. R. Narayanan exercised his discretionary powers—most notably demanding letters of support before appointing Vajpayee as prime minister and revisiting President’s rule proposals—thereby expanding central influence over states.
