History

Historical Context

Ryan’s 100.9 mph fastball in 1990 gave MLB its first radar-verified triple-digit pitch, eclipsing the mythic speeds of 1950s-60s fireballer Steve Dalkowski, whose wild arm was only anecdotal. The record stood until Aroldis Chapman logged 105.1 mph in 2010, spurring teams to chase velocity through analytics-driven scouting and bullpen construction and reshaping pitcher development pipelines.
