History

Historical Context

During the 2002 Israeli Operation Defensive Shield, the Israel Defense Forces entered West Bank cities, notably Ramallah, sparking widespread international condemnation. The United Nations reported that 30,000 Palestinians were displaced and 1,200 homes demolished during the six-week campaign by Israeli forces. Today's October 13 raids in Ramallah, where Israeli troops injured journalist Khaled Mattawa and arrested 30 Palestinians, echo 2002 incursions' mass detentions and force. The pattern suggests that without renewed diplomatic pressure from the United States and the European Union, cycles of violence may persist, undermining any peace process.
