On 14 September 2019 Houthi rebels struck Saudi Aramco’s Abqaiq and Khurais plants with drones and missiles, cutting about 5.7 million barrels per day – roughly 5 % of global output. The United States and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman blamed Iran, exposing gaps in Saudi air-defence. The October 2026 missile-drone barrage on Dhahran’s administrative tower repeats that tactic, again threatening Aramco’s command hub and prompting talks of diversifying export routes.
