History

Historical Context

After a 2-2 friendly draw with world-number-one Spain, Mallory Swanson scored her first goal in two years, echoing the United States’ surge in 1999 when the team won the World Cup before a record 90,185 fans at the Rose Bowl. That tournament sparked a surge in participation and led to the Women’s United Soccer Association, the first professional women’s league in the United States.
