History

Historical Context

After Billy Beane guided the Oakland Athletics to a 103-win, $41 million-budget season and a 20-game winning streak in 2002, his sabermetric model proved low-payroll teams could compete. The 2024 Tampa Bay Rays, managed by Kevin Cash and featuring pitcher Freddy Peralta, continue that trend with one of MLB’s smallest payrolls while reaching the postseason. These parallels reinforce data-driven budgeting as a lasting strategy.
