History

Historical Context

In July 1987 the UN adopted Resolution 598, leading the United States to start Operation Earnest Will (24 July 1987 – 26 September 1988) to escort Kuwaiti-flagged tankers during the Iran-Iraq tanker war. Rear Admiral Harold Bernsen’s Seventh Fleet convoy became the largest naval escort since World War II. The October 2026 attacks on ships like the Panama-flagged Ocean Molica echo that 1987-88 pattern, raising Gulf shipping costs again.
