History

Historical Context

1992 saw the Premier League sign a £304 million Sky-BBC TV deal, instantly raising club income. Clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, led by Ossie Ardiles, then pursued marquee signings instead of nurturing academy talent. The pattern reappears in 2024 when Italy coach Luciano De Zerbi omitted Brazil forward Richarlison, underscoring the lasting clash between money and youth development.
