Historical Context

Japan built the first Yalu River bridge in October 1911, linking Korean railways to the Eurasian network; the Imperial Japanese Army later replaced it with the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge (1937-1943). China began the New Yalu River Bridge in October 2011, finishing its side by 2014, but North Korea’s work stalled, pushing the planned October 2026 opening. The crossing carries about 70 % of China-North Korea trade.
