History

Historical Context

Created by the Railway Protection Force Act on 29 August 1957, the RPF safeguards railway property and passenger areas. Its powers grew through the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act 1966, the Railways Act 1989 and NDPS authority added in 2019. In Bihar, commuters restrained a suspected phone thief on a train, reflecting the force’s original mission; it is now headed by Director-General Sonali Mishra (IPS).
