PlayStation 5 Games Run on Xbox Series X Through the PS5X Emulator
By Drooid · · How we work
How the PS5X Was Built
Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal adapted the open-source KytyPS5 emulator—originally created for PC—to the Xbox Series X. The port runs inside the console’s official Developer Mode, a feature that allows owners to execute software under development. By leveraging this mode, Uenal compiled a version he calls PS5X, enabling the Xbox hardware to interpret PS5 binaries.
Demonstrated Games and Performance
Uenal has shown that PS5X can load four PlayStation 5 titles: GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, and Quake II. These selections were likely made because they are less demanding for the emulator. All four run with an Xbox controller, but only one produces audio. Video footage released by Uenal displays frame rates ranging from 25 to 45 fps, with occasional drops below 20 fps. A noticeable input latency is also evident, especially during fast-paced action.
Technical Constraints
The emulator’s reliance on Developer Mode means it is not intended for mainstream gaming use and may be limited by Microsoft’s terms for that mode. Audio support is incomplete, and the frame-rate variability suggests that more demanding PS5 titles would face greater challenges. The latency observed indicates that the emulation layer adds processing overhead not present on native PS5 hardware.
Community and Industry Context
Modders have previously succeeded in running PS5 games on PC using KytyPS5; Uenal’s work extends that achievement to a competing console platform. While the demonstration proves the technical feasibility of cross-console emulation, it also highlights the practical hurdles—performance drops, audio gaps, and reliance on a developer-only feature—that currently restrict broader adoption.
Outlook
Uenal’s proof-of-concept may inspire further experimentation within the emulation community, but no official statements from Microsoft or Sony have been released regarding support, legality, or future development of such cross-platform solutions.
