History

Historical Context

The August 2008 Russo-Georgian war saw Russian jets bomb Gori, killing about 60 civilians and striking power and civilian sites across five Georgian cities. A similar pattern reappeared on 14 October 2026 when Ukrainian drones hit Sberbank’s Balakovo data centre, igniting fires and cutting power. Both attacks illustrate how modern conflicts increasingly target critical infrastructure to exert pressure.
