Incident Overview
Police in Cologne say a 120 cm (3.9 ft) tall robot approached a 16-year-old girl from behind while she was with friends near a fast-food outlet in the city centre on a Saturday night. The device, described as wearing a black moustache, a gold-coloured chain and a white vest, allegedly grabbed the girl’s buttocks and made thrusting motions before she screamed and moved away.
Police Investigation Details
North Rhine-Westphalia police have seized the robot and two mobile phones belonging to the suspects. The alleged operator is a 16-year-old who owned the robot; his companion, a 19-year-old, is also under investigation. Both youths are believed to have streamed the incident live on social media and commented on it. Emergency services were alerted, and officers located the suspects a block from the scene a short time later, where the robot was found in the back of a car. Police are determining whether the robot’s movements were deliberately controlled at the time of the incident.
Public Reaction and Official Warning
The statement underscores concerns that online discourse may exacerbate the situation or constitute harassment.
Legal Context and Potential Implications
The investigation focuses on whether the teenagers’ actions constitute sexual assault, unlawful use of a robotic device, or violations of privacy and harassment laws. German law treats non-consensual sexual contact as a criminal offence, and the use of technology to facilitate such conduct may trigger additional charges. Authorities have not disclosed whether any charges have been filed, emphasizing that the case remains under active investigation.
