History

Historical Context

After Uruguay’s Luis Suárez bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini on 24 June 2014, FIFA imposed a nine-match, four-month ban and a CHF 100,000 fine—the longest World Cup suspension, surpassing Mauro Tassotti’s eight-match penalty in 1994. The episode echoes a broader pattern of strict disciplinary action, seen again when Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior received a four-match La Liga ban for a red-card clash with Sevilla’s Nathan Saliba.
