Historical Context

During the 1988 Iran–Iraq War, the U.S. Navy’s Operation Praying Mantis on 18 April destroyed two Iranian frigates, a fast-attack craft and two fighter jets after Iran mined the USS Samuel B. Roberts. The retaliation helped push Iran toward a July cease-fire. The 13-14 October 2026 projectile strikes on Singapore-flagged GFS Pride and GFS Giselle echo that same pattern of targeting commercial ships in the Hormuz corridor.
