Historical Context

In August 2010 Zhejiang Geely Holding Group completed the $1.3 billion cash purchase of Volvo Cars from Ford, the first Chinese takeover of a European automaker. The deal gave Geely access to Volvo’s platforms and sparked a wave of joint ventures and platform sharing, later replicated by BYD, XPeng and others building factories in France, Hungary and Austria as the EU tightens local-content rules.
