History

Historical Context

On 25 May 2005 Liverpool overturned a 3-0 halftime deficit to beat AC Milan on penalties, securing their fifth European Cup in the match dubbed the ‘Miracle of Istanbul.’ That comeback, their first final since 1985, cemented a reputation for dramatic resilience that continues to shape the club’s European ambitions today. UEFA later altered its rules to let title-holders defend the trophy automatically.
