Recent Violent Incidents
In the past few weeks, two Iranian security officials have been killed in separate attacks in the Mehrestan district of Sistan-Baluchestan province, an area that borders Pakistan and lies close to the strategic Chabahar port. Tasnim news agency reported that an officer commanding a women’s unit of the Basij paramilitary force—a component of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—was shot dead outside her home. In a separate incident, a police officer was killed when gunmen ambushed a police vehicle, also in Mehrestan. The official IRNA news agency added that “several terrorists” killed another police officer after attacking a convoy patrolling the area. Earlier this month, the IRGC’s Al Quds Force announced it had killed at least two suspected attackers and dismantled an alleged “terrorist cell” near Chabahar, recovering a Starlink device and a large cache of weapons.
Background and Regional Tensions
Sistan-Baluchestan province houses Iran’s critical Chabahar port, a key node for trade and a focal point of U.S. military strikes on Iranian infrastructure in July. Iranian officials repeatedly allege that “terrorist outfits” operating in the region receive funding and support from outside the country. Over recent weeks, the province has experienced a string of attacks targeting security forces, including a minibus assault that left one dead and three injured along the Makran coast, as reported by IRNA.
Official Responses
The IRGC’s Al Quds Force issued a statement saying the operation near Chabahar was launched after a security member was killed at a checkpoint near Rasak. Human-rights group Haalvash noted that military helicopters were circling the city of Iranshahr, indicating heightened security concerns. Iranian authorities continue to blame external actors for backing the militant groups responsible for the attacks.
Implications for Security
The killings underscore the volatile security environment surrounding Chabahar, a port vital to Iran’s economic and strategic interests. The recovery of a Starlink device suggests that militants may be leveraging satellite communications, raising concerns about the sophistication of their operations. Continued attacks could prompt further IRGC counter-operations and may affect regional stability, especially given the proximity to the Pakistan border and the recent history of U.S. air strikes in the area.
