History

Historical Context

The WNBA launched in 1997 with eight teams, an NBC TV contract and 14,284 fans at its first game, proving professional women’s basketball could draw national attention. Subsequent expansion—adding the Atlanta Dream in 2008 and the Golden State Valkyries announced in 2023—paired with a $2.2 billion media deal in 2024, set the stage for the 2026 Finals between those two franchises.
