History

Historical Context

In March 1978, the First Division clash between Manchester United and Liverpool, dubbed the “Battle of Old Trafford,” produced three red cards. Referee Keith Hackett administered the dismissals, and the game logged a record twelve fouls within the opening ten minutes of play. West Ham United’s 6-0 away victory over Lincoln City, with Andrew Kitchen sending off Tom Hamer and Conor McGrandles, mirrors that disciplinary flashpoint in today’s Championship. The pattern reinforces calls for stricter referee training and transparent review systems to preserve competitive integrity across English football.
