In 1926 the last gray wolves disappeared from Yellowstone; the 1973 Endangered Species Act then gave the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service authority to plan restorations. After a 1994 environmental impact statement, the Service and the National Park Service released 31 wolves in 1995-96—14 in January 1995 and 17 in January 1996—launching the recovery that now guides park rescue permits and trap use.
