History

Historical Context

Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, launched that year, pioneered large-scale digital rally streaming and secured his election victory. Its YouTube channel recorded 1.5 million views in the first month, Facebook attracted two million supporters, and the Democratic National Committee spent $730 million on online outreach. Now Vice President JD Vance’s Monroe rally will stream on Paramount+, CBSNews.com, and YouTube, while former President Barack Obama appears on a rival bus tour with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The 2008 precedent proves digital platforms can magnify candidate reach, prompting the Republican and Democratic National Committees to prioritize streaming for the 2024 primaries.
