History

Historical Context

The November 4, 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, where 66 Americans—52 held for 444 days—sparked Carter’s failed Operation Eagle Claw, killing eight soldiers and ending U.S.–Iran ties. That crisis cemented anti-American sentiment and a pattern of U.S. sanctions. On February 28, 2026 President Donald Trump ordered a new campaign against Iran, echoing Carter’s confrontational stance.
