Alleged Plot and Arrest

Palatine police detained 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis after investigators said he was preparing a mass-shooting attack that could have targeted the largest Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois. Prosecutors allege he made a terrorist threat, a Class X felony, and possessed an AR-style rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches, a Class 3 felony. According to the prosecution, Paporakis discussed the plan with co-workers at a Taco Bell in Arlington Heights, expressing a desire to kill “Indian people” and describing the upcoming day as “special.”

Manifesto and Weapon Cache

The manuscript contains racist slurs and calls for violence against people of Indian, Jewish, and Black descent, labeling them “subhumans.” It outlines a two-year planning period, a two-month focus on the specific target, and details on how he modified an AR-style rifle.

A search warrant executed at his North Baldwin Court residence uncovered:

  • An AR-style rifle lacking a serial number
  • A tactical vest and body-armor vest bearing white-supremacist imagery
  • Eight loaded magazines, one extended-capacity magazine, and roughly 300 rounds of ammunition
  • Additional tactical gear, a gas can, and items depicting Nazi symbols

The FBI’s Chicago Field Office assisted Palatine investigators, and the Aurora Police Department was notified to alert local Hindu places of worship.

Law-Enforcement Response

William Nord, Palatine Police Chief, said the department acted quickly after receiving “concerning” electronic communications from Paporakis. He emphasized that the specific location of the alleged attack remains unconfirmed and that no ongoing public threat has been identified. Nord added that Aurora police have begun outreach to Hindu congregations in the area.

Palatine police continue to review the evidence with the FBI to determine whether additional charges are warranted.

Legal Proceedings

Paporakis appeared before a Cook County judge in Rolling Meadows and was ordered detained. The judge set a subsequent hearing for later in the month. He remains in custody pending further court action.

Verbatim Quotes

  • “What we have actually found is that in almost every case, an individual who is planning an attack will exhibit behaviors, either online or in the physical world, that represent an articulation of intent to engage in violence,” — Cohen. Palatine
  • “We need to do a better job educating the public on what to look for and what to report, and we need to do a better job and provide more resources to localities so that they can rapidly take steps to prevent the shooting from occurring,” — John Cohen

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

Authorities have not verified a precise target site within the Aurora Hindu community, and investigators have not disclosed whether Paporakis ever attempted to fire the weapon in a public setting. The investigation into his communications and the full scope of his intended actions remains ongoing.
