Three Samajwadi Party MLAs—Rakesh Pratap Singh, Abhay Singh and Vinod Chaturvedi—joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at a programme in Gauriganj, Amethi on 13 October 2026.
They said they switched parties because of BJP-led development projects and opposition to the SP’s caste-based politics.
BJP state president Pankaj Chaudhary and national general secretary Smriti Irani attended the ceremony.
Rakesh Pratap Singh cited development under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP officials said the defections prove the Samajwadi Party’s caste-based, appeasement politics are losing public support.
Three legislators were expelled from the Samajwadi Party in June 2025 for alleged anti-party activities.
