On 5 January 1993 the tanker MV Braer capsized off Shetland in a Force 10 storm, spilling about 85,000 tonnes of Norwegian crude. UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, RN Lifeboat Institution and police rescued 34 crew while wildlife groups tackled oil-soaked birds. The incident spurred protocols and, after Lord Donaldson’s 1994 “Safer Ships, Cleaner Seas” report, created UK Emergency Towing Vessel fleet and safety rules.
