Ankita Bhandari murder case resurfaces as parents protest Sikkim governor appointment

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Event

On October 14 2026 the parents of Ankita Bhandari staged a sit-in at India Gate, New Delhi, demanding that the appointment of BJP leader Dushyant Kumar Gautam as Governor of Sikkim be postponed until the CBI completes its probe into the “VIP” angle of the 2022 murder. Delhi police detained the parents in the early hours of October 15 2026 and released them around 5 a.m. The protest was joined by Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Background & Context

Ankita Bhandari, 19, was a receptionist at the Vanantra Resort in Rishikesh. She disappeared on September 18 2022; her body was recovered from the Chilla canal on September 24 2022. Resort owner Pulkit Arya and two employees, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta, were arrested, confessed to pushing her into the canal, and were sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment on May 30 2025.

During the trial a “VIP” guest was alleged to have demanded “special services” from Ankita. A 2022 *Frontline* report and later police statements referred to a presidential suite reserved for such guests. In December 2025 actress Urmila Sanawar released audio clips allegedly linking the VIP to former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore, who identified Gautam—then BJP’s Uttarakhand in-charge—as the VIP. Gautam denied involvement and filed defamation proceedings.

Timeline

  • Sept 18 2022 – Ankita disappears.
  • Sept 24 2022 – Body recovered.
  • Jan 9 2026 – Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami recommends CBI probe.
  • Oct 12 2026 – Gautam appointed Governor of Sikkim.
  • Oct 14-15 2026 – Parents protest at India Gate; detained and released.

Official Statements & Responses

  • Uttarakhand government – CM Dhami said the state acted “swiftly” by arresting the accused, forming a Special Investigation Team, and providing aid to the family.
  • BJP – State president Mahendra Bhatt stressed that Gautam’s appointment was a constitutional decision unrelated to the case.
  • Dushyant Kumar Gautam – Denied the allegations as “false” and pursued defamation action.
  • Delhi Police – Conducted a pre-dawn operation citing security concerns and released the detainees after a brief period.

Criticism & Opposition

  • “For four years, Ankita Bhandari’s family has not received justice, but a ‘VIP’ accused has certainly been rewarded with protection and a constitutional position,” — Rahul Gandhi.
  • “This is brutality. You can see democracy coming to an end at India Gate,” — Pawan Khera.
  • “The pinnacle of the Modi government’s cowardice and insensitivity! The parents are taken into custody while a BJP ‘VIP’ is rewarded with the Governor’s post,” — Mallikarjun Kharge.
  • Kumari Selja – The CBI investigation should have been completed before naming a governor.
  • Ganesh Godiyal – Appointing a person named as the VIP is a deep blow to Uttarakhand’s common people.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

The SIT and police maintain no evidence links an influential person to the murder, while the family cites audio clips and messages suggesting otherwise. As of October 2026 the CBI has not filed a fresh FIR against any VIP, prompting the family to claim the probe “has not advanced an inch.” Gautam’s defamation suit has led to a Delhi High Court order removing social-media posts linking him to the case, though the substantive merit remains unresolved.
