History

Historical Context

On 24 April 2013 the nine-story Rana Plaza in Savar, Bangladesh collapsed, killing 1,134 workers and injuring about 2,500 after owners added unauthorized floors. The disaster spurred the Bangladesh government, the International Labour Organization and over 200 brands to sign the 2013 Accord on Fire and Building Safety and tighten inspections. Pakistan’s Al-Khair Education Center roof failure is being likened to Rana Plaza, renewing calls for stricter building codes.
