History

Historical Context

The 1963 Profumo affair, when Secretary of State John Profumo denied a relationship with Christine Keeler, triggered a government crisis and his resignation. The scandal forced Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s Conservative Party to lose the 1964 election, with the party’s vote share dropping 5 percentage points to 46 %. Today, former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson’s 2024 conviction for multiple child-sex offences has prompted the DUP, UUP, and the Northern Ireland Assembly to launch parallel safeguarding reviews. These inquiries echo the Profumo-era reforms that instituted independent oversight committees, suggesting lasting pressure for political institutions to enforce stricter ethical standards.
