History

Historical Context

In 2009, Boko Haram launched its first large-scale assault on the Nigerian Army’s Gwoza barracks, killing over 200 soldiers and sparking nationwide alarm. The attack prompted President Goodluck Jonathan to declare a state of emergency, allocating ?5 billion (?$13 million) for counter-insurgency operations led by General Abdulrahman Dambazau. Today's coordinated strikes on Garaha and Mairari villages echo that 2009 precedent, with Boko Haram again targeting army installations, Christian sites, and communication infrastructure. The recurrence underscores the need for sustained multinational support, as the United Nations and African Union previously warned that unchecked insurgency could displace over 2 million Nigerians by 2025.
