Venture Global’s LNG Capacity Expansion Targets Rising Global Demand
By Drooid · · How we work
Expansion Plans and Expected Output
Venture Global (VG) is advancing two brownfield projects to increase its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production. The CP2 expansion will add 12 liquefaction trains with a total capacity of about 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with first production slated for late 2028. The initial phase of the Plaquemines expansion is projected to contribute roughly 6 MTPA, with output targeted for 2029. Combined, the projects are expected to bring VG’s total LNG capacity to approximately 85 MTPA by 2029, according to company management.
Market Drivers Behind the Expansion
VG’s growth strategy is anchored in several macro-level trends. Global LNG demand is rising due to higher export volumes, expanding power-generation needs, and the rapid growth of data-center infrastructure, which consumes large amounts of electricity. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have reduced supply from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, while European gas inventories remain low ahead of winter, further supporting import demand. Despite higher prices, global LNG imports through July 2026 were essentially unchanged from the prior year, indicating resilient demand.
Financial Outlook and Valuation Metrics
Management has raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to a range of $8.7 billion to $9.1 billion, reflecting the favorable market outlook. From a valuation perspective, VG trades at a trailing twelve-month enterprise-value-to-EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) multiple of 9.98×, which is below the broader industry average of 11.04×, as reported by Zacks Investment Research. The company’s shares have risen about 46.5 % over the past year, and Zacks currently assigns VG a Rank #3 (Hold).
Industry Position and Comparative Landscape
Within the LNG sector, Enbridge Inc. (ENB) is positioned to benefit from expanding natural-gas storage, while Shell (SHEL) maintains one of the most diversified global LNG portfolios and holds a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). VG’s capacity expansion, coupled with tighter market conditions, could enable the firm to capture a larger share of the growing demand, especially as data-center electricity consumption and the shift from coal to gas continue to accelerate.
