History

Historical Context

In 1996, after U.S. Soccer created MLS to satisfy FIFA’s 1994 World Cup hosting condition, the league began with ten teams and a playoff system that crowned D.C. United as the inaugural MLS Cup champion. That single-elimination template has endured, guiding newer franchises such as Inter Miami, which secured a 2026 playoff berth.
