History

Historical Context

On October 25 1994, Charleston mother Susan Smith claimed a carjacking, but police soon doubted her story and recovered her two sons—aged three and one—in a submerged car 122 feet from John D. Long Lake. Her 1995 conviction, aided by attorneys David Bruck and Judy Clarke, highlighted growing 1990s scrutiny of mental-health defenses in violent crimes. The case drew international media attention and spurred calls for tighter child-protective policies.
