Panasonic Announces Recall of 640,000 Washer-Dryers Over Fire Risk

Recall Announcement

Panasonic Corp. announced on Thursday that it will recall approximately 640,000 front-loading washer-dryers sold in Japan and Taiwan because of a defect that could cause smoke or fire. The recall affects 18 models marketed in Japan and three models sold in Taiwan.

Scope and Technical Cause

The affected Japanese units were manufactured between 2021 and 2024, while the Taiwanese models were produced from 2022 to 2025. Panasonic identified the automatic detergent dispenser as the source of the problem: a leak can allow detergent or fabric softener to coat internal wiring, creating a short-circuit that may generate smoke or ignite a fire. The company has recorded six smoke-or-fire incidents in Japan and one in Taiwan; no injuries have been reported.

Company Response and Remedy

Panasonic said it will replace the faulty dispenser components and offer free inspections and repairs for all affected machines. Customers are instructed to stop using the automatic dispenser function until the replacement parts are installed and to apply for the service through Panasonic’s support channels. The firm emphasized that the recall is limited to the identified models and that the rest of its washer-dryer lineup remains unaffected.

Potential Impact

The recall represents one of the larger appliance safety actions in the region this year, given the volume of units involved. By providing free part replacements and inspections, Panasonic aims to mitigate safety concerns and preserve consumer confidence in its brand. Industry observers note that the prompt public notice and clear remediation steps may help limit broader reputational damage, though the recall could still generate logistical challenges for service networks in both countries.
