History

Historical Context

The worst modern Istanbul flood occurred on 9 September 2009, killing 31 people, causing over $70 million damage, and exposing the city’s inadequate drainage and unchecked river-bed construction. Since then Turkey has recorded more than 1,000 flood events (1960-2014) and climate-driven heavy rains have repeatedly overwhelmed the same infrastructure, prompting large AFAD and Red Crescent deployments.
